I just updated my email address on my profile (user-profile/) and now I no longer have my avatar pic.

So I figured I'd just upload it again. That didn't work either. I get a blank screen except for text saying "File upload error. Script will now halt."

I figure the latter issue is more likely to be server related but I'll throw a bug report in for the disappearing avatar

yep - that seems to have been broke for a while, probably since this site moved to the US. Mike has at least got added impetus to fix it since one of the other users overwrote his avatar with theirs...

Wow, that's interesting, kinda funny and a little worrying... I thought the system renamed a new upload if a previously uploaded file shared the same name

the forum code is pretty old and hasn't been looked at seriously for a long time, mainly because, for Mike and I at least, we've never used it, except here.

And there are also some permissions issues on the host server, which aren't helping.

And Harvey's been looking after the hosting for this site, and he's been busy sorting out his own stuff of late, so it's fallen through the cracks a bit.

We've had a similar issue with a custom plugin for user profiles just recently though, which Mike has rewritten, so should be able to port those fixes across soon.

All fixed now :) Forum avatar permissions updated so you can upload again, and it does rewrite the filename if it's the same as an existing one.. so quite what happened with Mike's one remains mysterious

Is the new server also the reason for redirects not working? For quite a while now all url's for this site except for the home page have required the 'www.' to be present.
